I feel like education, by default, should not be hard. "you get out of it what you put into it" is something I always heard of school but when I got there, I found I was compelled to become what the state wanted me to be. they need competent workers, to work the farms and tend to their industries, so of course I should be able to do 3+3 then somewhere along the line it became... something else. "most people don't need trigonometry." that's also something I heard. I disagree that trigonometry is not necessary to be. I just... don't think it should be forced into a childs head with a sledgehammer and inspiring dread. I think math is beautiful, it teaches one to see but really, vision's not necessary. not for what they want you to be. take it from me, a most misbegotten and vile witch-to-be, that nothing's as simple as they'll tell you. I had good teachers, it's true, they taught me to work and to follow through, but nothing about me is better or worse off from their influence. Maybe I'm a bit smarter. Maybe I act a bit like them. Maybe they helped me through difficult times, or perhaps they showed me a splash of my future. but I am who I am because of the soul inside me. [sorry, ran out of characters]

Good people in the USA, you must join forces with those who are discontent In the terrible years of bolsonaro presidency, we had a quote: "ninguem solta a mão de ninguém" which means, in a free translation: "nobody releases nobody else's hands" more or less like: "nobody leaves anyone behind". It will pass.

A screenshot of a series of Fediverse posts explaining why I'm dead. There was a fun little game that a bunch of people played called the "fedi games" which was a play on words relating to "The Hunger Games", a book series in which a group of people compete to the death. In the Fedi Games, I'm assuming there was some kind of techno-witchery at play which analyzed all the contestants and the nature of their comments and posts and such. It then generated "events" which occurred each day as the contestants slowly fought one another leaving a single victor. There were 16 players I think, and I got 5th place (meaning I was the fifth-to-last person to die) Anyway, day 1 I was forced to kill someone else and it was super sad. Day 2 I created a communal nation state Day 3 I tried again with different people Night 3 I tripped into a hole and died. Ah, oh well, that's just what happens to your spiritual leaders. You need to learn to be able to survive without them, to take their works and crystallize it into something that can be utilized for revolutionary potential, instead of the sharp bits of insight that are hidden within the morass of nebulous abstractions meant to distract and avoid the attention of those who would do harm. ... uh, anyway, back to being dead. I'm not sulking I'm still working, I'll be back someday. Probably. Maybe. Unless I don't, so don't wait up.

factories don't have to be fully automated. you can have workers in a big
building on several different floors with an open atrium style so they can
pass parts back and forth through the middle. Even little drones could solve a
lot of problems, but tiny rail-carts along the walls tend to be nicer because
they're quieter and such. "take this flash drive to so-and-so" or "can you

Actual causes of burnout, an infographic. There are several examples of various causes of burnout. Here they are one by one, for a total of fifteen: 1. False Urgency: There are constant fire drills, with unrealistic and unexplained deadlines. 2. Unfair Treatment: There is unequal treatment or favoritism that leads to resentment. 3. Relentless Change: Changes in leadership, policies, and the ways of doing things are frequent. 4. Excessive Workload: Work keeps piling up, with no sign of relief or support incoming. 5. Limited Growth: Employees feel stuck in their roles with few opportunities to move up 6. Low pay: Compensation doesn't keep up with hard work and strong performance 7. No balance: Days off, time for family, and time to recharge are hard to come by 8. Micromanagement: employees feel like someone's always watching them. 9. Pressure to perform: Leaders set unreasonable expectations and overreact to mistakes 10. Toxicity: negativity and hostility, including bullying and gossip, go unchecked 11. Lack of support: leaders give little support, leaving employees isolated and stressed 12. Bad communication: communication from leadership is limited, leading to confusion 13. No recognition: leaders rarely say thank you, celebrate wins, or recognize hard work 14. Monotonous work: tasks are repetitive and unchallenging, with no signs of changing. 15. Fuzzy Expectations: the company lacks clarity around goals, roles, and responsibilities.

Person 1: We need a "Children's Video Game Network" with sesame street philosophy but for games. Not creaky educational games. In fact, I don't care if they are educational as much as I care if they are of a high artistic caliber, thoughtful, fun and both free and free of advertisements. I'm not saying such games don't exist, but there isn't really a plan to make them. Really all modern content forms are weak in this area. Ambitious to say with PBS gone? Yes. But also it can't just be TV. Person 2: what if we hired the people who used to work at PBS at video game studios creating specifically games for children

The sun and the rain and the cold and the maned all demand that our stuff is on hallowed ground - the kind which walls all surround. And yet they'd cast us out. How rude. Well, I'm not afraid of you. what are YOU gonna do? what if I didn't pay my rent and never got a job and just helped out wherever I could find a friendly nod. "oh hey ho've ya been okay what are we working on here?" don't see nothin? start somethin" anarchy is fun. bullets less so. [next page] most jobs are bullshit. If dollars suddenly didn't exist but people kept doing what they were doing, people would work like twice a week. Me? more or less, who can say, depends on how I did feel that day. I tend to burn out. what if I didn't go to work for a month? "oh no my stakeholder value" get over yourself. your games do hold value. act like life is on the line. perspective of the earth of the sun, when viewed without photons. at the top left of the page, there are the words "the sky is black" written in green, the color of plants and renewal. in the middle there is an orange line arcing from one edge to another, the color of sunlight and warmth. criss-crossing the sun's line there is a series of steps, moments that correspond to a larger structure. The line for this is majenta, a strange color not found in nature. on the bottom there are the words "amid the stars", written in red, the color of life and passion. this entire scene has been framed in cyan, the light of cold and un-friendliness. the portrait is arranged on a canvas like a rolled up carpet, or perhaps the perspective of the earth on the stars it's designed with few colors, perfect for an AMOLED screen. Or just OLED in general - they have this neat functionality where if you don't send color data to a particular pixel, it doesn't turn on at all. Leaving a blank surface that feels "matte" to the glossy perspective of the colored pixels. matte like the surface of a pool table, glossy like a mirror. because of this fact, an AMOLED surface can feel "textured" to the eyes in a way that the glass surface of the phone might never bely artwork such as this, when viewed on such a phone, is beautiful to me.

i wish i could say things will get better, but i think we all know that in many ways things will continue to get worse, and so grief has become a thing that lives with us. i've noticed the last few years that the more i name my social grief and let myself feel it, the less reactive and squabbly i am, and the more compassion and energy i have to care for others

A response to the previous message written into the chat text box. It has -8 characters remaining, meaning the words expressed were simply too large to fit in the technical restraints of the computerized medium within which the author is communicating. Here is the text of the message: There's only so much time in the day, and when perceiving media people often tend to "turn off" their brain and exist in the moment. But, then, when they come across something they identify with, said brain lights up and says "Hey I know this!" and so they resonate in a pleasurable way, which they tend to then incorporate into themselves in a way that is personal and meaningful. It's not... wrong, per se, to do that. But it leaves you vulnerable. A better approach I think is to work toward facilitating space in people's lives, such that they may have the mental freedom to analyze their conditions and the nature of the reality they perceive through their own two eyes. There's nothing more powerful than a thinking machine aligned toward rationality through it's design comprised of the natural result of logical rules that are incontrovertible due to the nature of reality - All things are based on a combination of math and sensation. See this XKCD: https://xkcd.com/435/

since the entire building is oriented around a central elevator shaft, you
could have a 2d map that wraps around if you go far enough left/right.

Traditional metroidvanias tend to be very vertical though, so you might have
to take some artistic liberties with the level design. Unfortunately each
floor in most office buildings tends to be fairly flat, topographically...

But first - do you want a robust solution, a quick solution, or a rapidly

using this trick you can pretend to be competent in any programming language,
except maybe ancient ones like Fortran or strange ones like lisps or Haskell

if they ask you to use a framework or something tho you're kinda boned because
you need to know which functions to call and how to initialize context and
such. When using a framework, the boilerplate is the code, which is why
 frameworks suck

infographic displaying what it means for a meal to have "flavor depth" when cooking, the layers of food closest to the heat source (usually a stove-top) will be warmer than the parts near the top of the pan, which are not only cooled by the air but also are farther from the heat source. the warmer parts will cook slightly faster than the colder parts, meaning they will taste slightly different because the more you cook food, the more the flavor "develops". when stirred together, the "more cooked" and "less cooked" particles will combine and the result is a flavor that has "texture" because there is a greater differential between each particle of each ingredient. You should still stir your food though, because otherwise it will evaporate too much moisture from the bottom and begin to burn.

Do you remember stores with floor-to-ceiling goods? The kind that didn't go
bad, so you could afford to have lots of inventory. Not like it's being
replaced and thrown out as soon as the executives with their profit margins
decide that its no longer worthwhile.

Here's an idea - how about executives are paid by the employees to manage
their company? And if things aren't going right, they can get a new team.
Like, if every team had control of their manager, I wonder what dynamics would
 emerge?

150%, and that half is further divided into 25% good and 25% bad because of
miscommunication and the perils of massive organizational inertia.

unless you're in the kind of corporation where the MBAs like to get their
hands dirty. That's the kind of organization that's on a crash course with
 insolvency.

--- #61 notes/comms-box ---
═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════──────────────────────
there is a requirement for a simple, easy to set-up, and easily replacable
system which can be used for comms.

Specifically running a variety of different services, such as fediverse
instances, matrix for text-comms, VoIP, and distributed computing using Chapel
or DistCC or other such capabilities. In addition, it should be able to run a
file-server and a web-server which hosts an HTML page for the user.

All of this functionality should be operational out-of-the-box, with minimal
configuration required. No more than adding a checkbox to a config file in
 order
 to activate each individual service.

This box should be cheap, and easy to provision. An image must be made, and
some bash scripts should be written to easily configure it.

In addition, there should be rudimentary programming capabilities included,
 just
in-case a user is left with no other options. It should come pre-configured
 with
SSH access out of the box, so it can be remotely controlled, and the languages
 included should be:
    C/C++
    Python
    Lua
    Bash
    Rust
    Chapel
This should cover most surfaces in terms of programming capability
 requirements.

In terms of hardware, it need be little more than a SoC such as a Raspberry Pi
or other such hardware. It needs at a minimum an ethernet port, and USB ports.

The box itself should cost no more than 40$, excluding provisioning and the
 cost
to pay back whatever capital investments are necessary to create such a thing.

yes you could certainly use a database for that, but databases are
 significantly more complex.

For a game, yeah a database is a good idea. especially if it's a multiplayer
 game.

For a script or small program, use small files to store data.

I personally like the idea of "plain-text" files because it allows your users
to modify them if need be, while databases tend to be more locked down.

like game loops, cooldown timers, status effects, and thread pools. │
Then develop a way to present it to the player using UIs, visuals and │
graphics, narratives, sound, etc. This will probably involve implementing your │
game in an engine like Godot, Raylib, or Bevy. │
By developing your game in this order, you will DESIGN the systems first, and │
IMPLEMENT them second. Systems are agnostic - implementation is tied to a │
specific engine. You will learn more about programming by doing it this way, │
instead of losing your motivation by learning new tools like game engines or │
3D modeling systems, which aren't useful unless you already have a game. │
I'd recommend starting with pencil and paper until you're ready to implement. │

So. To reiterate, the employee in Arkansas is paid a wage of 30$ per hour, and
the state in which the corporation is based (say, Oklahoma) is paid 30$ for
each hour that employee works. However, these dollars are specific to the
region, and cannot leave it - Oklahoma and Arkansas *must* reach an equitable
arrangement where their dollars equal out. Balance is desired, as it brings
stability and provides a foundation for future growth. If one side prospers,
so does the other. Why should the Oklahoman have less than the Arkansan?

it's easy to mistakenly mis-hear things that sound similar in their contrasted
 grammar context.

I like to say "understood." when I understand something that someone's telling
me, because all of the contrasts to that statement (like "I don't understand"
or "can you explain more about X as it relates to Y? etc) are different in
pronunciation and structure. Meaning it's much easier to "get" the intended
message just based through sound-patterns. Great for people who are only
half-listening because they're thinking about something really hard and aren't
thinking about what you're saying as much. Great for describing problems and
getting assistance as you both sorta mentally-puzzle through it to a solution.

... and they say debug isn't solved HA

Lua is the most fun language to write code in! The reason is because it's so │

It depends on the size of the file, copying a thousand lines of config file
probably isn't that big of a deal, but copying a million lines in a log file
just to pass it as an argument to... pad it to the left, or whatever, that'll
DEFINITELY slow down your execution speed!

I can write C in Rust, but I can't write Rust in any other language.

there's a lot of unique semantic options for accomplishing things that I
already know how to do that I often find my syntax is pretty... basic. lots of
manual assignments, no more than 4 or 5 levels of function nesting.

I like to use threads and arrays, and think about in-game simulation more like
a calculation than an input-reacting device. though input would certainly be
encouraged to make the simulation more precise.

the borrow checker gets in my way, but that's not too big of a problem - I
just have to copy a bit more data around. Easy peasy.

(I'm a bit rusty, but I can learn syntax)

part of the reason the classical socialist countries had difficulties with
bureaucracy is because they centralized both execution *and* operation. I
believe it'd be much better to centralize just execution, while leaving
operation to the distributed masses who can generally figure their own jobs
out. Of course, they'd need to be led, but that's the job of on-site
organizers who can get people together to accomplish a goal. Different jobs -
not better, not worse, just different.

I realized the reason it's so difficult for me to get into a new video game is
because my perfect game existed at one point, but no longer, and all else
 pales in comparison.

The make-believe games of children are without equal. They represent our inner
truth and desires, cast upon the canvas of our experience through the outputs
 of imagination and physical exertion.

I'd spend my time as a child wandering through the forest with a stick in
hand, climbing on things and exploring. I grew up in Wyoming, and the forests

pursuing. that's okay, it just means you need a different approach.

much better, I find, to point your idea of "truth" toward what you believe in,

I'm 29, and I had Pokemon Silver growing up. However I bought it used, and the
battery was worn out or something because it wouldn't save! But still I played
that single game for months on my gameboy color, trying to see how far I could
get. I had a level 40+ Totodile (or was it Crocanaw? I forget) and
unfortunately one day I took it on a 30 minute car ride, expecting the battery
to last at least 30 minutes, but unbeknownst to my child self there was
construction on the way, which turned it into a 4+ hour drive. I couldn't
believe it! The battery died, and I lost my save file... I was heartbroken. T.T

Next time I played, I learned a lot. I actually read some of the dialogue
text, and learned you could use pokeballs to capture pokemon

I was so dumb I was using a single character to get through the game. What a
 n00b.

Anyway when my mom heard about my tribulations she bought me Pokemon Gold,
which I played quite a bit less. I was focused on other things you see, like
 Dragon Warrior Three. Alas.

Growing up, I started with 3 video games - Super Mario Deluxe, Dragon Warrior
1&2, and Asteroids. For the gameboy color. Then, a year or two later (what
felt like forever), Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.

Classics. I was so lucky. Not because it was more expensive than my peers, but
because I had the right games.

Others joined later, Tetris, Mario Kart, Star Fox, etc... But having so few
that were so good for so long made me adore them. I would play for about an
hour a day, any more would cut into my imaginative play-time.

I did not dream of games. But I craved their moments.

These days, I play games for so long that I dream of them. In my most
vulnerable moments I treat them like my baseline state, rather than a
 prescribed appointment of delight.

I miss wandering around without thinking of my objective. The games seemed to
change, rather than progress. They felt alive to me. I never beat them,
 because I didn't need to.

I'll raise my kids the same way, if I ever having any...

with in the same way that people are used to (think chromebooks dragging and
dropping icons in a web UI) but produces a text-file full of code and all the
required compilation scripts for any language the user requires...

seriously, programming is not THAT different between the different languages.
especially the main ones. they're all essentially variables and function calls
at the end of the day, so why not abstract away all the extra details and
build something that n00bz can actually use to build things.

I technically could make this but I don't have the bandwidth and I don't think
it's important really? who can say, the tools tend to co-create the solutions

yeah that's probably better too since it'll be easier so there'll be fewer
bugs, especially since processing audio isn't usually performance critical ^_^

TBH I just want people to make more threading primitives like locks,
semaphores, and iterators. Like... thread pools, or hashmaps that run a
function on each record stored within every time each of the threads passes a
checkpoint, or paginated arrays of data that run a function on themselves and
the records near them (with slightly different input values, of course) idk
what those are called but I can't resist putting them in everything

Anyway I do think multithreading programs that don't need it will teach you to
be a better programmer, so... depends on what you're working on I guess. Are
you preparing to be ready and working, or are you ready and working?

then that" etc send an index into the function pointer array. That way there's
 no branching at all.

The best way to generate performant code is to reduce or eliminate branches.
If you're working on a video game or networked program, this can be incredibly
 important.

The second best way is probably reducing cache misses and increasing
parallelism, but those are different problems.

sorry for the delay. Posting in reverse chronological order, but reversed and
put in order. that way you can scroll "down" instead of "up" like you normally
do when scrolling fedi - are you talking to your followers, in which case you
want chronological order, or are you talking to people who will read down the
list on your profile and see these one by one? in which case you'd want
reverse chronological order. Ah but if you're writing to people in the future
who are reading this from your backup archive, which is most likely to be the
case, then you should do it in chronological order. Well, that'd be silly
though because none of your followers are online right now, so you should do
reverse chronological order so that they can catch up on your personal feed
 timeline.

... I don't think any of that makes a lick of sense. Why don't you just post
them in the order that you wrote them? That's the easiest for everyone to go
 on.

oooooo yeah I usually try and reply to my old post with any new information. I
never get the chance to think the same thoughts twice because when I was
younger I had problems with thought-loops where I'd think something like "darn
I could have handled that social situation better" and before you know it I'd
be rocking myself to sleep trying to stop thinking negative thoughts about
 myself.

So I broke my brain a little and now I can't think the same thing more than
once, which is part of why it's so hard for me to finish projects. Alas.

vegetables have minerals, fruits have vitamins, rice-and-beans or meat have

the easiest analogy would be to say an election is a gun, votes are bullets,
and the shooters are the candidates

could also say that the shooting event is an election, bullets as a concept is
democracy while each individual bullet is a vote, and the gun and shooters are
 the ballots and voters

I dunno. I don't especially like thinking about guns and elections in the same

cheese is just a body-part that a cow has willingly shed. For nutrition.

Is it vegetarian if it's the cells produced by a body? Is it vegan if it is
 capable of growing back?

Do snakes shed their selves when they leave behind a shell? Or is it like
hair, just... keratin, a compound found all over nature.

Is cutting a branch vegan? Is eating a cherry that has fallen to the center of
the road? Both those are made of fibrous materials, the nutritious bounteous
feast, and a small kernel-like mass that serves as a propagation method for a
 creature utterly vast.

 (But factory farms, remember?)

It's important to maintain a healthy sense of skepticism.

I mean, if George Washington himself suddenly appeared and said "Like King
Arthur riding forth from the mists of Avalon, I have returned to ensure the
revolution must be won" then perhaps we should assume he's just a really good
actor. Unless he's y'know still competent at military command, even though his
knowledge of past encounters doesn't quite transfer to our new strange reality.

He'd probably be a pretty great organizer though. We all have our strengths.

 things I almost posted
picture shows the mastodon client with many unfinished and unsent comments to various interesting threads that people have posted on the tech.lgbt server. there's too many to enumerate, these are just the ones that the author managed to write down. sometimes they cut off mid-sentence, sometimes they completely bounce around (as in, returned to the original point and completed it). these messages were generally unsent because the author could not remember *why* they had written them, which is why they were hesitant to post them. It felt like their agency had been overwritten, and they don't recall consent having been given. alas, that a server's community leaders (admins) could delete posts that they don't agree with. Why not give us the responsibility of our discretion? If we lose all our friends, time and time again, then clearly we're just desperate for attention. Clearly we're not evil, (please say we're not evil), but even if we are we want what is best for them. ... what oh yeah okay so I noticed some of my posts had been deleted, and all I could think of was that someone deleted them. Probably either me, in a state I don't remember, or some other person or organization. Everything I do is skywriting. I pour my heart out on my website, and some people read it. It's pretty neat. I've never really had someone say they "get it" though - there were a few for specific things I posted, usually on /r/shruglifesyndicate, but then reddit kinda destroyed their own home. oh wel

... unrelated, but hey check out this cool social media collage thing that I
 made!
a long collage of various social media posts. Unfortunately they were not preserved when I turned my computer off, but their record was saved because I screenshotted them before closing the window. They're all things that I said, or mostly things that I said, also some things from my friends. I didn't get permission to post them, but what they said was relatively innocuous. Just the stuff that they wouldn't mind sharing, the stuff that you should go to their profile website if you'd like to know more.
