Issue 025: Implement True Chronological Sorting by Post-Dates

Current Behavior

  • Chronological page sorts poems by ID numbers, not actual temporal order
  • Timeline progress calculation based on position in processed sequence
  • No access to real post dates from original ZIP archives

Intended Behavior

  • Sort poems by actual creation/posting timestamps from source data
  • Calculate temporal progress based on real time progression
  • Extract post dates from ZIP file metadata and content

Suggested Implementation Steps

  1. Date Extraction: Parse actual post dates from ZIP archive files
  2. Timeline Construction: Build chronological sequence based on real timestamps
  3. Progress Calculation: Update timeline progress to reflect true temporal progression
  4. HTML Generation: Update chronological page with correct temporal ordering

  • Issue 026: Scripts directory integration (for accessing ZIP archive post dates)

Implementation Details

Date Extraction Enhancement

  • Updated filter_golden_poems() to include creation_date field from poem metadata
  • Added parse_date_for_comparison() function for ISO 8601 date parsing
  • Enhanced extract_post_date_from_poem() to prioritize metadata creation_date over content parsing

Chronological Sorting Implementation

  • Modified generate_golden_chronological_browser() to sort by actual timestamps
  • Added timeline progress calculation based on temporal position (not ID order)
  • Enhanced HTML generation with creation date display and progress bars

  1. Added date parsing function: parse_date_for_comparison() handles ISO 8601 format timestamps
  2. Enhanced poem filtering: filter_golden_poems() now includes creation_date field
  3. Improved chronological sorting: Uses actual timestamps instead of ID order
  4. Added progress visualization: Timeline bars show temporal position through collection
  5. Enhanced CSS: Added styles for timeline progress bars and visual feedback

/src/flat-html-generator.lua

  1. Enhanced date extraction: extract_post_date_from_poem() prioritizes metadata creation_date
  2. Improved timestamp parsing: Supports full ISO 8601 format with time components
  3. Maintained fallback logic: Still supports legacy content-based date extraction

Testing Results

  • ✅ Verified poems load with correct creation_date metadata
  • ✅ Chronological sorting correctly orders poems by actual post timestamps
  • ✅ Generated chronological.html shows true temporal progression (2021-04-27 → 2021-05-03 → etc.)
  • ✅ Timeline progress bars work correctly for golden poem collection
