Most of the smells you cherish from your childhood are simply the smells of │
natural materials in various states of decay. Like... A pair of jeans in a │
drawer that hasn't been opened for a couple years. Or a particular mineral that │
your grandma put in her cookies that has fallen out of fashion lately because │
of it's endocrine disrupting capabilities that were only discovered post her │
death. Or perhaps a type of plastic that people used to create toys or │
sprinkler heads but was deemed to be too expensive by capitalists and therefore │
was phased out as the seasons turned and your generation turned into the next. │
We build our world through the actions of our wills. Our arms are strong and │
contrive the land upon which we stand - all things we hold dear, from │
streetlamps to our panoply of viziers [what a strange way to say society? ? ?] │
was created through the exertion of calories through the manifestation of our │
body-ies, and so we (as a people) build toward [whatever's against] our fears. │
Ummm idk people are cool │

 how ubiquitously specific!

Do you ever think about how cis straight "self described 'normal people'"
believe that gender implies pronouns? What even would you expect to be used as
pronouns for such a gender as this, how remarkable, how strange! Yet
simultaneously how beautiful and deranged. I love it. I love that gender. I
love the people who would express it. I love the people who would profess to
express any gender that is conceptually aligned with a gender such as this!
What a triumph, that our enlightened culture in the far-away age of 2024 might
produce such a brilliant display of humanity! I cherish such expression, it
binds us to our ultimate destination - the totality of our unique experiences.
I'm going to fill the rest of this message box with heart emoticons.

"Then you are my enemy." said Anakin Skywalker, aligning himself toward his own │
 designs. │
And yet, was the galaxy not safer and more content under the protection of │
those he aligned himself against? Was there not more progress, more culture, │
more cherished peaceful yearnings of hope and abandoned [fear, but pronounced │
 as "indiscretion"]? │
He, as the ultimate arbiter of justice and fate in this crucial turning point │
of time and reality that he alone could judge and direct, chose the path of │
 least resistance. │
"That which is right is most often that which is hard." said a wiser man than │
I, for I cannot be compared as a man since I relinquished it in pursuit of │
 being a tran(s person). │
And thus, society fell under the spell of a rotten vindictively and │
remorselessly sharp avatar of fear, and thus the empire was born. Oh that │
Anakin might have learned! That he might preside in his own live, and │
disconnect from the endlessly escorcelled web of meaning! │
All that we are is our actions. We live in the now - NOW NOW. │

not tomorrow, not today, but now. How do you feel, in this body of yours? How

it remarkable, that your eyes should be? Rods and cones they say, fucking...
magic, inseparable from divinity, that we should conceive of the world we can

Ah, if only our judgement was computerized. They only speak in absolutes, do
they not? Surely extreme discretion is impermeable, and impossible to
 controvert.

What's that you say, that justice might wait yet another day? That we should be
forced to be oppressed by our own dues? Something about how the impossible
machine of the bureaucracy is destructive and vicious, like the Kinsey Winsey
or the Moloch expressed in this essay:

Wait, hang on, what was I saying? Oh yeah the fallibility of humanity is both
our greatest weakness and our greatest strength. Because through it we might
design imperfect structures (laws) that we orient ourselves around and build
our society upon, but also that we might identify those imperfections and use
them to enact good upon the world.

Unfortunately, we also tend to use those imperfections for our own benefit,
AKA, to enact evil upon the world. Alas. Human nature is tricky. : \

my default. Anyway goodnight, sleep is death and dreams are the bounty of

I think this passage from the linked essay sums it up pretty well. I'm going
back and re-reading it now before bedtime. Surely that won't impact my dreams
 at all : )
There’s a passage in the Principia Discordia where Malaclypse complains to the Goddess about the evils of human society. “Everyone is hurting each other, the planet is rampant with injustices, whole societies plunder groups of their own people, mothers imprison sons, children perish while brothers war.” The Goddess answers: “What is the matter with that, if it’s what you want to do?” Malaclypse: “But nobody wants it! Everybody hates it!” Goddess: “Oh. Well, then stop.” The implicit question is – if everyone hates the current system, who perpetuates it? And Ginsberg answers: “Moloch”. It’s powerful not because it’s correct – nobody literally thinks an ancient Carthaginian demon causes everything – but because thinking of the system as an agent throws into relief the degree to which the system isn’t an agent.

Thanks, it means a lot. Sometimes I am a little "distant" from reality (like
tonight, tbh) but I generally always am within sight. Meaning I can still
understand what people are saying. My uhhh.... "plan" is to always be vigilant
and look for times when people cannot comprehend what I say - even the most
mundane of things - because if so then surely I am psychotic. At that point
I'll just kinda go along with whatever anyone says, even if it feels like I'm a
cow in a factory farm or whatever my mind might contrive to torture me with.

Thanks for reaching out. Sorry you've lost people. I hope they aren't gone
 forever. I hope I don't go forever. We'll see, I guess.

 iconic for a Nirvana song
picture is a mouse cursor positioned over the "closed captions" UI element on a Youtube video. The captions appear to be disabled. A message appears that says "Subtitles/closed captions unavailable" which confirms our suspicions. Often these captions are automatically generated using AI or some computer science black magic, but apparently songs by the band "Nirvana" are too difficult to understand and so they go un-captioned.

I try to be conscientious of such things and only believe the things I read
that I agree with explicitly. I've been burned before, in my youth, which
perhaps is a privilege that those who come beyond us might never experience in
the future AI generated internet that shall scarcely resemble the wild wild
west that I grew up in. Perhaps, but I cannot say for sure, as the future has
necessarily not yet come to pass, and so we cannot see how it shall unfold. I
hope people can learn the digital literacy skills I developed. I hope they
learn new ones that they'll then pass on to me. I hope the future is grand and
beautiful and... Frankly I don't think I'll be disappointed in that particular
 respect. : )

A response to the previous message written into the chat text box. It has -8 characters remaining, meaning the words expressed were simply too large to fit in the technical restraints of the computerized medium within which the author is communicating. Here is the text of the message: There's only so much time in the day, and when perceiving media people often tend to "turn off" their brain and exist in the moment. But, then, when they come across something they identify with, said brain lights up and says "Hey I know this!" and so they resonate in a pleasurable way, which they tend to then incorporate into themselves in a way that is personal and meaningful. It's not... wrong, per se, to do that. But it leaves you vulnerable. A better approach I think is to work toward facilitating space in people's lives, such that they may have the mental freedom to analyze their conditions and the nature of the reality they perceive through their own two eyes. There's nothing more powerful than a thinking machine aligned toward rationality through it's design comprised of the natural result of logical rules that are incontrovertible due to the nature of reality - All things are based on a combination of math and sensation. See this XKCD: https://xkcd.com/435/

I wrote a little bit of that on my website, but something told me not to. I
think because it would weaken the message? Frankly it was quite difficult to
say even the barest minimum of "I wrote these things when I was distressed and
didn't post them until now. I'm only posting them now because they're becoming
increasingly relevant and it's a little embarassing tbh to showcase how much
I've changed. Please don't take these things out of context."

I wasn't wrong per se, but I was misaligned. I am always re-aligning myself in
small ways that eventually create (what I believe to be) the best and most
ethical direction. BUT it's easy not to see that. People don't see things in
their totality, they see only what they are exposed to. That's not bad, it's
just a product of our finite existence. Which is why I value personal
expression more than self-identified moral and ethical directioned [beliefs,
 but pronounced as "adaptations"]

Perhaps I'm strange, but I like to take that particular joy that you're
describing in essentially every piece of media I consume. Not as a vengeful
feeling, but rather just a product of the idea that I cannot truly know the
intentions of those who created it, so I approach my understanding of it from
an angle that is aligned according to my own experience. Which means that my
conclusion lands somewhere they (presumably) didn't intend...

Oh what a life, wouldn't that be grand? Video games are a complex subject, and
require complex analysis - the likes of which could only be shared through an
extended explanation and exploration - perhaps in the context of a university
course, might a particular genre be plumbed? We have art history degrees for a
reason. People discuss the history of math and physics in much the same way.
Thank goodness for YouTube, I have no idea how we'd share the history of
computers and gaming if not for the people making retrospectives on obscure
 hardware from 1988.

These three images are the same, I just needed 3 pictures to fit all the words
 into the low-vision description box.

I'm cheating the system! Nobody can stop me! Rules are fake! The system is
fake! Nothing will hold me back! Something something
I ran out of text characters, both in the original post and in the description that I'm writing right now, so please listen to the description of the 2nd picture as well. It's the same picture, just with the 2nd half of the content of the post added to the screenreader description. Begin content of post: Your perspective is valid and I can understand how hearing the words that he spoke would unnerve you. I'd say that topically it's less similar to the Epic of Gilgamesh, and more similar to... -- CW content warning -- dot dot dot a particular piece of writing called dot dot dot mein kampf? not just because of the connections to genocide and racial... stuff... that I don't really want to touch with a 10 foot pole. Maybe a 15 foot pole but tbh I just don't have the core strength to wield such a long pole, so I think I'll just not. Err.... what was I saying oh yes. I wouldn't want to remind you of the times when a particular person wrote terrible things. I wouldn't repeat those things, as I feel that would imply that I believed those things. And I try my best to believe the least terrible things, which as far as I can tell is a decent way to go about it ^_^ so I guess I'm saying I wish I could extract words written by another and express them through my own mouth rather than implying the perspective of the author, which is necessarily displaced from my own. [out of characters, see second picture] [begin text of 2nd picture] I mean, if a particular german dictator who lived in the 20th century (was it really so little time ago?) wrote some interesting and novel essay on the art of impressionistic painting or... whatever he liked to paint... I don't think we'd have any right to use it to express ourselves. It'd feel immoral and strange, because it's impossible to excise the magnitude of the beliefs that would later go on to define that man. But I also wouldn't want to unnecessarily condemn a person to infinite reprisal because the path of their thoughts carried them down a dark road - if, perhaps, he had written a piece about all the genocide and racial stuff and whatnot... But then immediately recanted it, explained why he believed what he did and why he now believes something better, and carried the shame of his cognitive failure with him forward into the future, until all those he had wounded with his words had forgiven him... Then maybe he would have been redeemed. Obviously that's not what happened, and bringing it back to the essay I posted, should the author of that essay deny the words he spoke and claim they were a mistake that he has since learned from... Perhaps he could be forgiven. But such things are controversial for a reason, and so we are not compelled to grant him any succor or mercy in our reprisal and vehement resentment. [ah nuts ran out of space again, see... third picture? teehee] [begin description of 3rd picture] [they're the same pictures btw it's just a way to "cheat" and add more words into the description box that you're listening to right now] [phew that was a lot] I guess I just want to reiterate that what I was trying to do was express a thought that required a lot of typing to explain, and it mostly aligned to what was expressed in the essay I posted. Like, a leaf node on the tree of my expressive argument : ) as to your question, I don't really remember being included in any internet beefs. I think I was swept up in the pop-leftism + pop-feminism of the mid 2010s, but that quickly matured as I engaged with people who knew much more than I and I could see the cracks and fissures in the stuff I had learned from the internet. I really do learn more from engaging with a person than by reading... I think perhaps it's due to the back-and-forth nature of conversation? You can temper and refine your ideas by striking them against the hammer and anvil of another. It's fun! Anyway I'm way over the text limit. [finished with all pictures]

I, being a witch, posted something on Nextdoor a few days before Halloween
about how the phases of the moon at the time were the harbinger of dark and
ancient evils that crept through the night on that particular day, one day,
just once, one night per year, because... y'know, Halloween is supposed to be
 spooky?

People there hated it. They muted me and blocked me and called me names. So I
deleted my account because it's obviously not designed for witches like me xD

Agreed! That's why I never touch the stuff. Frankly I worry that if I did, it
would "infect" me somehow, because brains are kinda stupid. Or maybe it's the

Don't read that stuff. I wish I could forget every slur I ever learned, because
my internal monologue just... REALLY enjoys intrusively thought-ing my internal
 narrative whenever possible. >.>

It takes real, genuine effort to not be racist or whatever because brains are
stupid, but like... it's kinda necessary to be a good person, so, y'know, don't
think bad thoughts about people you don't know? And if you find yourself with
intrusive thoughts related to that kind of thing, then focus your attention on
vanquishing them, because it's important. It really is. Just do it. Work on it.
Be better. I know you can. [says me to me lol]

Just want to point out that email is about as private as skywriting. Which
means that everyone knows what you buy on Amazon or which forums send you
messages... So if you want to keep your posts secret, you should use encryption
 - such as gpg, for example.

Actually, wouldn't that solve the problem that @user-78 is talking about? Just,
 build encryption into everything.

Ah, nope, wouldn't work, just realized that public means public, and you can't
encrypt a public post. Well, you could, but then it's no longer public, just
noise transmitted on a public channel.

Idk. My opinion is that the fediverse is (and should be) like email. Like
skywriting. If you mark something as public, it should be seen by anyone who
wants to see it. It's an opt-in option. And frankly I miss Myspace, so I'm okay
 with archives.

I see... I mean, I've spent enough time around plants and animals to know that
certain things are instinctual and are passed on through biological
reproduction. It's not just that, but my other evidence is anecdotal.

But I also know that most behavior is learned, through a combination of
circumstance, action, and the intentions behind said actions, taken by the
individual who is incorporating behavior into their psyche. So... While I'm
sure there's some merit to each part of the "nature/nurture" spectrum I don't
think it's really relevant on a meta, socio-political scale. You can just
abstract all of those concepts and mark it as a black box called "humanity" and
work through whatever socio-political problem, concern, or quandry you're
 working through.

Abstraction is our friend - It hides the details that (while technically may
have SOME merit) are irrelevant to the larger-scale decisionmaking, and in fact
can often delude decionmakers into being unethical.

I see, it seems you know more than me about this topic. It's true that search
engines don't index emails, but I was thinking more of a "cybersecurity"
perspective, as in any "sufficiently motivated" individual or organization
could access your emails should they so desire. And should they be willing to
(I'm assuming?) break a few laws.

If it can be done, and if it gives information that could be used for leverage,
then you can be assured that someone will do it. I personally worry about
people in power who could be blackmailed because their communications were more
public than they anticipated. Which speaks to the problem mentioned in this
post of the search-indexing-opt-out functionality being present but
circumnavigatable. Avoidable? Able to be bypassed? It's an illusion of security.

They tell you to get a bigger needle for pulling the hormones out of the vial

point in that. I say get the same kind of needle (the small one) and just take
a bit of extra time drawing it out. I still use two needles each time, but if I
use the "least common denominator" then I can have a bit of extra flexibility
 with little downside.

 EDIT: Here's a better example I think:
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBKgPmS5Fyw

Here's an example of a modern incarnation that might be easier to view than the
 older stuff.

His personality is silly, earnest, genuine, expressive, and friendly. Most of
the comedy of his stories come from interactions with the environment and the
creative solutions used to accomplish goals and tasks.

I like to view his perspective as 100% valid and reflective of the world he
inhabits, which essentially grants him (and others around him) reality warping
powers which I think is more interesting than just dismissing it as a silly
cartoon. Through that lens each situation he encounters is an exercise in rapid
creativity and weaponized logic, which is kinda cool to a witch like me.

something I made a couple [time] ago
A visual of two hard disk drive designs, current design and proposed design. the current design features a rotating platter where memory is magnetically stored and a "read/write head" (which the author mistakenly labels as a "laser") the proposed design features many heads all arranged in a spiral outward such that many parts of the disk can be accessed at once. This hard drive design seems to be designed for parallel access to data.

But if I had a BILLION dollars you can bet your butt there wouldn't be any

 frankly it'd be well spent.

Billionaires aren't solving childhood food insecurity.

They have the capacity to, with their essentially endless supply of dollars,
which taste good on rye with a dash of mustard.

But alas, they choose not to.

They CHOOSE to STARVE children. They choose that, by not dedicating their lives
 to solving that particular problem.

"oh but like, there's so many problems in the world, how can-" shut the fuck
up, spend the dollars, make it happen, and now there's one fewer billionaire
and one fewer problem in the world. The next one can fix the next problem,
that's why we keep them around, isn't it?

So you're telling me the speed difference between Python and C is due not to
the logic that the programmer uses, but rather the optimization capabilities of
 the compiler?

(An interpreter includes a compiler, it just runs it in a loop rather than a
 single pass)

Hi, I'm learning about semaphores right now and trying to explain them to a
friend. But I only sorta understand how they work - can anyone look at this
pseudocode and tell me if I'm on the right track?
Some C pseudocode working through the semaphore design pattern. Here's the text of the pseudocode:  /* no lock example */  void start_thread(int* x) {   *x += 1; }  int main() {   int x = 0;   for (1000 times){     start_thread(&x);   }   print(x); }  /* in this case you have no idea what will print because thread A will take x and be like "ah yes it's 423" and then in the next instruction it'll be like "I'll increment this to be 424" and in the next one it'll say "okay now it's time to store 424 in the variable X" but like... there's a thousand threads all doing that at the same time, so odds are you'll have 5 that are like "ah yes this is 423 I'll set it to 424" */  /* not a good plan. Need a lock, so only one thread can use it at once. */ /* mutex example: */  void start_thread(int* x, int* x_mutex) {   *x += 1;   *x_mutex = 0; }  int main() {   int x = 0;   int x_mutex = 0;   for (1000 times){     while (x_mutex != 0){ } /* do nothing */     x_mutex = thread_id;     start_thread(&x, &x_mutex);   }   print(x); }  /* this should print 1000, but it's basically as slow as doing it single threaded. */  #define MAX 10  void start_thread(int* x, int* x_semaphore) {   *x += 1;   *x_semaphore += 1; }  int main() {   int x[MAX];   int x_semaphore = MAX;   for (1000 times) {     for (int i = 0; i < MAX; i++) {       x_semaphore -= 1;       start_thread(&x[i], &x_semaphore);     }     while (x_semaphore != MAX) { } /* do nothing */   }   int value = sum(x, MAX);   print(value); }

                                                           ┌───────────┐

sometimes I think about how much more productive I'd be if I had a code editor

could position things strangely, like two functions side-by-side with boxes

I made an alias that overwrites cd so I don't have to do this. The important
line is line 27, you could probably accomplish something similar like this:

 alias cd="cd ${1} && ls -v --color=auto"

I also set it up so I can change more than one directory up using ... or ....
 or .....

also I have a few shortcut scripts, cdir and qcd. cdir creates a quick way to
drop a bookmark wherever I'd like, while qcd can make permanent bookmarks. Also
qcd makes it so whenever I open a new terminal it opens to the last directory I
was in, which is nice if you need a new terminal to do something in the current
folder and you don't want to have to walk alllllllll the way back.
A BASH script that overwrites the built in "change directory" command to auto magically list the contents of the directory you've moved into after moving.  here's the content of the script:  #!/bin/bash  alias cd="cd-improved"  function cd-improved(){      if [ "${1}" = "..." ] ; then         builtin cd .. && builtin cd ..     elif [ "${1}" = "...." ] ; then         builtin cd .. && builtin cd .. && builtin cd ..     elif [ "${1}" = "....." ] ; then         builtin cd .. && builtin cd .. && builtin cd .. && builtin cd ..          elif [ -d "./${1}" ] ; then         local target_dir="./${1}"      elif [ "${1}" = "cdir" ] ; then         local target_dir="$(tail -n 1 '/home/ritz/scripts/.cdir-target')"         echo ${target_dir}       else         local target_dir="${1}"     fi      if [ ! "${2}" = '--no-ls' ] ; then         builtin cd "${target_dir}" && ls -v --color=auto     else         builtin cd "${target_dir}"     fi          # if the qcd function is defined     if declare qcd > /dev/null; then         quick_cd -d DEFAULT         quick_cd -a DEFAULT     fi }

I love how the gnu C documentation lists this particular page as number 6.66
An excerpt from the GNU C documentation. The page describes how to use binary constants in C code using a prefix of '0b', essentially instead of using the integer 42 you might write '0b101010' This particular page is from chapter 6, page 66. The joke, of course, is that using binary numbers in C code in this way is demonic in some way (traditionally the number 666 is regarded as the "devil's number")
